MAYVILLE – A vacation cottage property owner is seeking $100,000 from Chautauqua County for a Bigfoot Museum, and he is receiving encouragement to apply for the money.
Peter Weimer from We Whan Chu Cottages on Chautauqua Lake told the county’s planning and economic development committee last week that he has been talking about local Bigfoot sightings at sports, travel and outdoor shows in Cleveland, Erie and Hamburg.
“I created the Chautauqua Lake Bigfoot Expo as a tourism special event,” Weimer said.
“Since I have created this event 3½ years ago, I am up to 18 eyewitnesses from Chautauqua County.”
Most of the sightings were reported by people who preferred to remain anonymous, Weimer said.
“But they are resolving themselves knowing that they have seen a Bigfoot but were afraid for reasons of ridicule that they didn’t want to speak publicly of it,” he added.
Weimer also acknowledged that he sees the profitability of the Bigfoot Museum in the county.
“This was a special event that I was just entering as an entrepreneur, and it came back and kind of surprised me,” he said of the popularity of the Bigfoot Expo that he has hosted in the fall.
George Borrello, chairman of the Planning and Economic Development Committee, encouraged Weimer to fill out an application for funds.
“Well, whether or not you have to believe is one thing but if it is something that would draw tourists and create economic impact. If that can be proven, then that is certainly worth discussing,” Borrello said.
Borrello gave Weimer information about the grant application available online on the county’s website for the funds.
“The whole purpose of the grant is to start new tourism attractions in Chautauqua County,” Borrello said.
Weimer said he will continue to promote the Bigfoot Expo at shows throughout the Great Lakes Region.
