The class will be held at Chautauqua Marina, 104 West Lake Road, Mayville (across from Webb's). New York State Law updates this year include: Wearing a PFD (Personal Floatation Device): New York State Navigation Laws state that everyone under 12 years of age must wear PFD (life jacket) while onboard a boat under way, and that a PFD be available for every individual on board. Also Effective November 2009, anyone onboard a recreational boat less than 21 and under way from Nov. 1 to May 1 must be wearing a PFD. PWC( Personal Water Craft/Jet-Ski) Operation: Persons 14 years of age and older who wish to operate a personal watercraft (solo) must take an 8-hour classroom based New York State Approved Safe boating course and successfully complete the proctored exam before they can operate a PWC on any waters of New York. If you do not have a safe boating certificate, but you are on the PWC with a person 18 years of age or older and they have a Safe Boating Certificate you may operate the PWC if they are on the PWC with you. All solo PWC operators must be a minimum of 14 years old and hold a safe boating certificate - no one under the age of 14 may operate a PWC solo under any circumstances without a person ages 18 or older who holds a New York State Approved Safe Boating Certificate. This law only affects the operation of PWCs. Anyone between the ages of 10 and 18 who holds a boating safety certificate can operate a motor boat. Anyone over 18 does not need a boating safety certificate to operate a motor boat. Personal Watercraft Rentals: If you are 18 years of age or older and wish to rent a PWC from a livery (such as Chautauqua Marina), you may do so providing you follow the livery state imposed safety guidelines.  |
POSTED: April 26, 2010 Matt Stage, president of U.S. Stearn Lines LTD, which operates the Belle, said a number of projects are under way to keep the replica of the past in tune for future voyages. For instance, he said, the steel in the hull of the Belle's bow section is being replaced this year, and the boiler system and generator of the 100-foot vessel were replaced last year. Stage said it is a replica of steamboats that carried 3,000 people across Chautauqua Lake before railroads became modes of transportation. It is a replica of Mississippi boats and was built in 1975 by the same architect who built those used there. When the Belle was put up for auction in 2007, Stage bought it, after being afraid it would otherwise be scrapped. "Everyone was used to having steamboats on the lake," he said, adding he wanted to keep that a reality."It's authentic," he said about steamboats on the lake being part of the area's history. Bringing that back to passengers, he said, has led him to hear stories of grandparents bringing grandchildren for a ride and telling him how they, too, rode the steamboats with grandparents. One, he said, was moved to tears. Stage also has a story of a boat and his grandfather, who can be seen working alongside him on the Belle. "It's important to learn what our forefathers went through," said Dell Stage, who has been helping Matt with Belle repairs recently. He said knowing history helps youth understand, "we have it pretty good today," he said. Besides, said Dell, the Belle helps make the local economy strong, as people from across the country and Europe have come to ride it, and some come annually. "People from the area are dumbfounded (to learn of the region's history)," the elder Stage said, adding they do not realize the excursions that brought people to "the hub" that is Chautauqua County. "The nostalgia of a boat like this creates happy memories," Stage said. His memories of it may be why he will travel to give the boat's architect, Alan Bates, a plaque with part of the original paddles from the Belle, when Bates is initiated into the National Rivers Hall of Fame on April 30 to receive its Lifetime Achievement Award given to less than 100 people in 140 years. Stage said Bates is one of the last steamboat architects, learning to design steamboats and designing the Belle for James Webster. "I really want to thank him," Stage said. Stage said without Bates' work, the Belle would not be as beautiful. Stage, who plans to attend Bates' initiation ceremony, will present him a framed "I Love New York" poster featuring the Chautauqua Belle as the image of the year. Stage has his own words for Bates, too. He said Bates designed "a one-of-a-kind piece of working American history," when designing the Belle - one of only four such vessels still in operation. Planned Chautauqua Belle events for the coming year include: Chautauqua Idol Cruises, narrated historic cruises between Mayville and Chautauqua Institution, picnics on the paddle wheel, cruising and cocktails, firework cruises and rock on the docks. Private parties on the Chautauqua Belle can also be booked. According to its Web site, the Belle is the largest and most historic vessel on the lake, providing four daily trips seven days a week to Chautauqua Institution from Mayville. | By Dennis Phillips, dphillips@post-journal.com POSTED: April 19, 2010 The $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit that was part of the economic stimulus package and extended in November will be coming to an end April 30 and a binding sales contract will be needed with the closing by June 30 to qualify. Also, the tax credit was extended to anyone who has owned their current house at least five years. They too are eligible for a tax credit of up to $6,500 for purchasing a new home. Couples earning as much as $225,000 and individuals earning up to $125,000 would qualify for the tax credit. That was also an increase from the original stimulus package that had a $75,000 limit for individuals and $150,000 for couples. With the deadline approaching, Jan Murray, Chautauqua County Board of Realtors executive officer, said she believes some people are trying to get the paperwork finished by the end of the month. ''I think they are (trying to beat the deadline). Although, a lot of people, I believe, have already purchased (who wanted the tax credit),'' she said. Ms. Murray is not alone in thinking that people will try to make the cutoff by the end of the month. ''We anticipate another flurry of market activity in late March and April as both first-time and trade-up buyers seek to get their next home under contract before the April 30 deadline," said Duncan R. MacKenzie, NYSAR chief executive officer, last month in a news release. ''The federal tax credit program's success in aiding the housing market recovery can already be seen in the market activity of the last several months and will continue to be reflected in sales data through the middle of 2010.'' Many realtors believe the program jumpstarted the slumping housing market during the last year. The state's housing market continued to post double-digit sales gains compared to a year ago as February 2010 sales jumped 13.2 percent, according to sales data accumulated by the New York State Association of Realtors. The statewide median sales price rose by more than 12 percent compared to February 2009. ''The second consecutive month of double-digit sales increases compared to a year ago is a very positive indicator of the strengthening of the Empire State's housing market,'' MacKenzie said. ''The New York State housing market is starting 2010 significantly stronger than 2009 both in terms of sales and median sales price growth.'' Ms. Murray believes that not only did the housing tax credit help the real estate market, but other areas of the economy as well. ''I think it helped the whole market in general during the winter,'' she said. ''I think it helped the economy in general with furniture and all the other amenities that go with buying a house.'' Ms. Murray said even with the zero hour approaching for the tax credit, that is not the only element pushing sales. ''I know real estate agents are busy right now. A lot of them are very busy. Even the higher-priced homes and not first-time buyers (are interested in purchasing a house). They're generally busier,'' she said. Ms. Murray said there was some talk of the tax credit program being extended again, but the buzz has died down and doesn't seem to be a possibility now. However, Ms. Murray said she is thankful the government did offer and extend the program for homebuyers in the first place. ''I appreciate that the lawmakers went through with this and helped the economy in that way,'' she said. ''I think it was a boost to the economy when we needed it.'' On the title song of her new album -- notice it's on her own new label, Redneck Records -- Gretchen Wilson gives you her idea of what country is, and it includes the Allman Brothers, Hank Williams Jr., ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd. So, she's still a redneck woman and she still likes to rock -- no surprise there. "I Got Your Country Right Here" has its cliched moments -- the "red-blooded, blue-collar" hero of "Truckin' Man," the lament for the passing of "Outlaws and Renegades" in country music. And Wilson takes the tough-chick bravado a little too far with "Walk on Water," which, unless our irony detector is on the fritz -- not that she's big on irony -- seems to defend drunken driving. For the most part, though, Wilson steers clear of caricature. For one thing, with numbers such as "I Got Your Country ..." and the anthemic "Work Hard, Play Harder," she remains a convincingly hard-edge country-rocker (while "Earring Song" adds a dash of Loretta Lynn-like feistiness). For another, she effectively balances that brashness with the ballads "I'm Only Human" and "I'd Love to Be Your Last," which reveal a more tender and vulnerable side. When it comes to Easter wines, don't put all of your eggs in one basket (North East, Pa.) March 29, 2010 -- Riesling is the traditional wine to serve with Easter dinner, and fruity, sweet Concords are perfect for Passover, but here in the Lake Erie wine growing region, there are many ways to incorporate wine into your holiday festivities.
Add a touch of sparkle to your Easter brunch with a bubbly mimosa, create a farm fresh feast with a leg of lamb and earthy Pinot Noir, or sip a sweet cordial as you dip into the kids' Easter basket.
