A Grape Stomping Record, Bob Newhart, and a Marathon Weekend! October 11-12, 2014 The City of Jamestown and Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Center for Comedy have big plans for Columbus Day Weekend with a Lucy Town Half Marathon, Kids Run, and 5K races. Runners from 27 states attended the inaugural event in 2013. At noon on Saturday, join this year's effort to set a Guinness World Record for the most people stomping grapes (30 tons of them!). Individuals of all ages and groups are encourage to register and participate to overcome the current record of 977 people set by a small town in Spain. A performance by legendary comedian Bob Newhart at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts caps off the day on Saturday. A Colorful Festival  Colors of Chautauqua Plan a learning adventure during Chautauqua County's season long fall learning festival, the Colors of Chautauqua, now through mid-November. Take a class through Jamestown Community College's Center for Continuing Education or SUNY Fredonia's Lifelong Learning and Special Programs. Take a walking tour of Jamestown's historic districts or explore history through personal stories told on a tour of century old cemeteries. The Colors of Chautauqua includes dozens of workshops on culinary, creative, and cultural topics held in both indoor and outdoor settings across Chautauqua County. See the schedule online.   The Grape Harvest Take a drive or a bicycle ride through America's Grape Country, the largest grape growing region in the country east of the Rockies. Enjoy the scenery while inhaling the intoxicating aroma of the grapes ready for harvest. Stop at the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield and learn the heritage of grape growing in the oldest Concord grape growing region in the world. Visit the 25 wineries along the Lake Erie Wine Country wine trail and taste award winning varieties including dessert and ice wines. Plan to return during the Harvest Wine Celebration over for weekends in November with featured wine and food pairings and a booklet of recipes with entertaining ideas just in time for the holidays. Seasonal Cemetery Tours Jamestown and Fredonia Engage in history with tours of century old cemeteries. On October 17 and 18 the historic Forest Hill Cemetery comes alive during Festivals Fredonia's Harvest Moon Cemetery Tours led by ghostly guides in horse-drawn trolleys. The 45 minute tour includes stories of Fredonia's founding families, national heroes, Revolutionary, Union, and Confederate soldiers, artists, entrepreneurs and industrialists. In Jamestown, learn some of the more than 43,000 personal stories of saints and sinners buried in Lake View Cemetery with tours led by members of the Fenton History Center on October 4th and 11th. Take an afternoon or nighttime walk through the spectacular 1859 cemetery and hear costumed actors tell the stories of Jamestown's past including a murder as the result of a love triangle, a woman missionary doctor that changed lives, and a heartbreaking story of a WWII soldier that survived the Bataan death march. Tours can be walking or horse-drawn and take about an hour. Twilight Mausoleum Tours take place October 12th. Reservations are required for all cemetery tours. Fall Fest at Peek'n Peak October 11-12 & 18-19, 2014 Peek'n Peak Resort and Spa's annual Fall Fest toasts the warm weather and colorful foliage over two weekends with seasonal fun for the whole family. Festivities include a juried craft show, pumpkin cannon, ski lift rides, snow sports equipment swap, corn hole tournament, car show, live music, children's games and entertainment.  A new pumpkin carving contest takes place October 18 and 19, along with the 2nd Annual Peak Mountain Challenge on October 18th, when participants race to the top of Sugar Shack mountain. The first male and female finishers will win full season ski passes. Peek'n Peak's new dual zip lines, Mountain Adventure Park with its series of increasingly challenging aerial courses, and Segway tours will also be open and available during the festival.

WRFA-LP Station for the Arts Turns 10! September 13, 2014 Jamestown's community radio station for the arts, WRFA-LP 107.9 celebrates its 10th anniversary, Saturday, September 13, 2014. The evening includes a special Rolling Hills Radio show and a concert by the 10,000 maniacs. The party starts at 5 pm in the Studio Theater on Third Street in Jamestown when Rolling Hills Radio host Ken Hardley welcomes longtime friends John Latini and Miche Fambro to the radio broadcast performed before a live audience. The event is free, but reservations are required. Then at 8 pm, Jamestown's own 10,000 Maniacs take the stage of the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts. The band's lineup includes original members, Steve Gustafson and Dennis Drew, longtime drummer Jerry Augustyniak, guitar player Jeff Erickson and their vocalist since 1994, Mary Ramsey. The Maniacs released the album, Music From The Motion Picture in 2013 and is currently working on their new album, Twice Told Tales. Health of Chautauqua Lake is topic of Saturday program

 encourage Chautauqua County residents, business owners, and anyone else who has an BEMUS POINT – Programs to improve water quality will be spotlighted as the Chautauqua Lake and Watershed Management Alliance holds a Chautauqua Lake Rally from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Village Casino, 1 Lakeside Drive.

After opening remarks from Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan, there will be presentations about the newly formed alliance, the causes and impacts of algae in the lake and an upcoming sewer management study.
Representatives from several lake conservation organizations will be on hand to answer questions. For information, call county watershed coordinator Dave McCoy at 661-8915.

Mayville resident releases ‘Lost Places of Chautauqua County’

Mayville author and personal historian Patricia Pihl's book, "Lost Places of Chautauqua County" is a compilation of articles, adopted from months of interviews with town historians, which explore less-known, but fascinating places in the county's past.
"Lost Places" covers such topics as Chautauqua County's link to the Underground Railroad; how Dewittville's "Poor Farm" was stressed by the new wave of immigrants and its link to the present day county home; the three World War II POW camps; the "islands" of Chautauqua Lake, and other places from the county's recent and distant past.
According to Pihl, the book also sheds light on interesting residents as well as former social, economic and medical realities.

The idea for the series was spawned when Pihl and her husband, David, stopped while snowmobiling near the Chautauqua Gorge. Looking across a 200-foot ravine, David pointed to the site where Eagle Ridge Ski Resort once stood. A popular spot with area teenagers, the resort would ultimately close due to the untimely death of its owner, Tony DeMambro, on its slopes.
"The story intrigued me," Pihl stated, "and I wondered how many more of these forgotten or barely known places existed in the county?"
Pihl tracked down Eagle Ridge's Austrian ski pro, Hans Auer, now in his eighties, to record his memories of the resort and its short, but successful stint as Westfield's winter haven. From there, she continued interviews of local historians, writing about other forgotten places of the past.
John Paul Wolfe, Curator of the Chautauqua County Historical Society, said the series "covers areas throughout the entire county, creating interest for residents and tourists alike." Wolfe added, "It has been an enjoyable challenge to find information for Patricia in the archives for the next article. The amount of research which needed to be done each week was amazing."
Pihl admits that the book "only scratches the surface" of the many interesting places that existed in our county's past, but has, so far, been enthusiastically received.
She adds the experience has taught her a great deal. "First, history is ultimately about people their circumstances and challenges, what motivates them and what they fear. We imagine ourselves in their place; what if we had lived through that war, under a dated belief system, or in poverty without current economic safety nets?"
She also has a new appreciation for the work of historians whose passion requires painstaking research to bring the past to life. "Most work for the sheer love of history, making sure to set the record straight, while separating fact from fiction."
"Lost Places of Chautauqua County" is available at The Fenton History Center in Jamestown, The Chautauqua Bookstore at Chautauqua Institution, The Grape Discovery Center and McClurg Museum in Westfield and Off the Beaten Path Bookstore in Lakewood.
