Chautauqua County Coming Alive

Chautauqua County Coming Alive With Spring Shows

4/24/2008 - Skipping the usual opening graph hoopla and cutting right to the point, Chautauqua County has come alive with arrival of spring. Not that there was any lack of shows this past winter, but venues seem to blossom around Jamestown as the weather warms. Makes a guy forget about a little thing called Coachella that's also happening this weekend.

¯ SPOTLIGHT ON BLUEGRASS AT THE CELORON LEGION — Bluegrass jams happen every Thursday at the Celoron American Legion. Going on three years now, the weekly event is led by Doug Waterman and the Backwoods Bluegrass band.

''We were at Doo-Dahs in Busti until they closed, then we moved it to Celoron,'' Waterman said in a recent e-mail to Late Night Spotlight. The weekly shows begin at 7 p.m.

Comprised of Waterman on guitar, Rick Rossi on dobro, Bill Smith on mandolin and Nora Cole on upright bass, Backwoods Bluegrass has been old-time country and all types of bluegrass for four years. The group, whose members live in Warren, Sugar Grove, Sharon and Stow, play everywhere from Western New York to eastern Ohio.

On Saturday, May 3, the group will play Pine Junction in Findley Lake from 9 p.m. to midnight.

¯ THE PLACE TO BE TONIGHT — 103.1 FM The Fox found its first three finalists for Last Comic Standing last Thursday at Shawbucks. The radio station's second annual comedy competition continues tonight at 8:30 p.m. Like last week, tonight's preliminary round is open to all interested contestants. It is the final preliminary round before next week's finals event.

Registration for tonight's event begins at 7 p.m. Admission and participation is open to anyone over the age of 21. For more information on rules and pre-registration, call WQFX at 487-1151 or visit www.fox103.com. Information about the Nobodies of Comedy event at the Reg Lenna can be found online at www.reglenna.com.

¯ THE PLACE TO BE THIS WEEKEND — Though vastly different, Mojo's has two high-quality rock shows happening this weekend.

First is an evening of metal on Friday, featuring new metal band — not Nu Metal band — Off. Also on the bill is area favorite Desecrator, which features singer/guitarist Chris Lee, bassist Tony Piazza, guitarist John Oberg and drummer Darrin Payne. Nearing 15 years of playing metal ''like it used to be,'' Desecrator have an in-depth, full bio available online at MySpace.com/DesecratorUSA.

On Saturday, a Brooklyn-based collective called Oakley Hall will play Mojo's. Jamestown's own the Audience will open.

Not that Oakley Hall defies description, but no word fits the band as snugly as a genre title like metal describes Desecrator. Relishing in old-time song structures and other Americana fare, Oakley Hall plays a style of folk rock that's simultaneously familiar and experimental. The group, which formed in 2002, has released CDs on Brah Records — a subsidiary of JagJaguwar Records — and most recently on Merge Records.

''It's our first time in Jamestown and it should be kind of a crazy show,'' frontman Patrick Sullivan said in a recent phone interview with The Post-Journal. ''We're a pretty road tested band. We've toured our faces off in the last few years. I think I have friends in Seattle and L.A. that I've seen more than my friends in New York. And in that time, we've played a gajillion cities, small towns and places the size of Jamestown. ... Jamestown is pretty close to New York and we hope to have a good time. Maybe we'll put it on the routing for future tours.''

Being on Merge and having toured with bands like the Constantines and Bright Eyes, here's to hoping Oakley Hall's members enjoy themselves this weekend.

Synergy will play the Lakeview Hotel & Restaurant on Saturday night. 2. Carol's Silver Dollar has a Saturday night show with Barefoot Sarah. 1. The Steve Johnson Band will play the Hickey Tavern in Allegany on Saturday.

¯ MOVIE OF THE WEEK — The Reg Lenna Civic Center will continue its spring movie series Saturday with an 8 p.m. screening of ''There Will Be Blood.'' Starring Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis as a turn-of-the-century oil man, ''There Will Be Blood'' examines ideas of greed, jealousy, hate, revenge and kinship. Other films to be screened at the Reg this spring include ''The Orphanage'' and ''The Band's Visit.'' For more information, call 484-7070 or visit www.reglenna.com.

¯ DELICIOUS DRINK(S) OF THE WEEK — Bowling, beer, chicken wings and shots? The Democrats' potential presidential nominees are just like us! And there's video footage to prove it! Just YouTube the words ''Hillary Clinton, Shot and Beer'' to see the former First Lady sipping some Crown Royal.

Commemorate the odd everyman attempt yourself this weekend by knocking back a boilermaker. The recipe is simple, requiring only whiskey and beer. The method is a little more complex, depending on personal taste. There's the separate method, where the shot and beer are drunk separately; the mixing method, where whiskey is poured into the beer; and the bomb method, in which the shot glass of whiskey is physically dropped into a pint glass.

And seriously Hillary, Crown Royal? Not Beam or even Jack Daniels? At least Obama drank Yuengling when he was in Pennsylvania.

¯ COMING NEXT WEEK — Diners visiting any of several area restaurants on Tuesday will help raise money for Aids service organizations simply by eating lunch or dinner. With more than 2,800 restaurants participating internationally, Dining Out For Life is able to raise considerable amounts for Aids awareness and Aids services each year. In Jamestown, several restaurants will donate a portion of their sales to the charity, including Sky. On Tuesday, Sky will host a cocktail hour and dinner buffet according to bar representative Jon Mead. Watch The Post-Journal early next week for more details on the dinner event and other participating organizations.

Also next week, the Nobodies of Comedy will return to the Reg Lenna Civic Center on Saturday. The annual tour passed through Jamestown for the first time last year, bringing ''the young stars of tomorrow'' to cities like ours for an evening of contemporary stand-up that's everything from intellectual to raunchy.

¯ QUESTION OF THE WEEK — Name the American actress who married Bobby Darin in 1960. Known for portraying ingenues, the New Jersey native was born April 23, 1942. Also celebrating a birthday yesterday was Carlos Dengler. The Queens native, who was born April 23, 1974, plays bass in what New York City rock band? The group released two albums on Matador Records before moving to Capitol Records in late 2006.

In answer to last week's question, Maynard James Keenan is the American-born singer who fronts Too, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. He was born April 17, 1964.
