Something Unique to celebrate grand opening Saturday
9/19/2006 - SHERMAN As you stroll down Main Street in Sherman, something new catches your eye. Its Something Unique, a custom matting and framing shop owned and operated by Bob Rogers.
The shop first opened its doors in March of this year. It is a nice addition to the shops in the village, complementing other new businesses in the downtown area.
After high school, Rogers moved from the village, living in the Jamestown and Kennedy areas for over 20 years where he managed a wholesale plumbing and heating company for several years and the JARTS transportation system until it closed permanently.
Having met his wife in Sherman while working in plumbing and heating, he moved back to the village in 1990 and established his framing business on April 1, 1999.
Rogers background in framing developed from his interest in calligraphy and the necessity of having his work framed. His first framing lessons came with the college courses he took in calligraphy from the late Sherman Brooks.
He has since attended the International Picture Framers School in Kingston, Ontario Canada for both basic and advanced picture framing courses and joined the Professional Picture Framers Association in 2005.
Something Unique, 121 West Main St., Sherman, will celebrate its grand opening with an open house on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Local artists John Andrea, Jim Calhoun, Joanne Johnson, Wally Lawson, Lorna Perkins, Donna Thomas and Susan Wolfe, will be on hand for the event promoting classes, demonstrating their media and selling prints.
Refreshments will be prepared by Tim Murphys Brick Village Gourmet Shop, also on Shermans West Main Street. Brick Village Gourmet is part of the Food is Good Group that operates Olives, The Watermark, The Ironstone and Le Fleur restaurants.
Rogers has also planned door prizes and Tree-Free Greeting Card specials to enhance the event.
Something Unique has a satellite location at The Red Brick Farm, on West Lake Road, Mayville, in the Discover Artworks Gallery, just a quarter mile from the Chautauqua Institution Gate.
Orders may be placed and finished pieces picked up at either the Red Brick Farm or Sherman location.
Rogers has an extensive selection of mats and frames to choose from and features an extensive line of Amish-made frames.
Something Unique can also help customers with Super Plak pieces as well, an interesting alternative to traditional framing.
The Red Brick Farm complex also houses a division of Brick Village Gourmet, along with La Fleur, the French restaurant, Henry & Co. Furniture, Fleur de Lis Floral and Gift Shoppe, Heathers Greenhouse and Garden Center, Chautauqua Miniatures and The Yarn Cottage
