Fall Festival begins today at Peek'n Peak Resort

FINDLEY LAKE, N.Y. -- There's a touch of winter at the 25th annual Fall Festival at Peek'n Peak Resort and Spa.

On the opening day of the festival Saturday, skiers and snowboarders glided down a high jump, landed on cylindrical and rectangular rails, twisted and landed again in snow shaved from the ice at local ice arenas, sometimes on their feet and sometimes not.

To a teen, they shook it off and went back for more.

The Rail Jam is a highlight of Fall Festival, which also includes live music, horse-drawn wagon and lift rides, and crafts. The festival continues today and next weekend.

Kyle DeLong, 16, of Perry, Ohio, skied down the jump, lost his balance in a twist, and went down. He shook it off, stepped out of his skis and climbed back up the jump for another go.

"I'm ready to get skiing," he said.

After this winter, DeLong and others won't have to wait to ski. The resort has bought a BagJump, a giant cushion for skiers, snowboarders and bikers to land on all year. It will be inflated and ready to use in December, said Nick Scott Jr., vice president of Scott Enterprises, which owns the resort.

"We brought in an AcroBag (in February), and it was so exciting and so much fun for so many people that we went out and bought our own bag," Scott said.

The resort is also expanding its terrain park for snow acrobats by one-third.

Beyond the snow sports, it's still fall at the festival. Lifts provide bird's-eye views of the foliage, and a cannon fires pumpkins into bits of squash behind the main lodge. "It's hilarious," said Tammy Price, of Saegertown, watching with her husband, Mitch.

Michaela Bann, 14, and sister Makenzie, 13, of Fairview Township, enjoyed a Segway ride more.

"You just do this, this and that," Michaela Bann said, leaning. "It's not that hard."

Renovated rooms mark Peak's 1st year under new Erie-based owners

FINDLEY LAKE., N.Y. -- The new owners of Peek'n Peak Resort and Spa are preparing for their second ski season by emphasizing how the resort has changed on the inside.

Scott Enterprises Inc., which bought the Peak in U.S. Bankruptcy Court a year ago, has spent $2 million renovating all 108 rooms in the Peak's Tudor-style lodge.

The rooms had not been updated in years, and their disrepair had led business groups to stop using the Peak, said Nick Scott Sr., president of the Erie-based Scott Enterprises.

Since the completion of the renovations in July, bookings have been up, with the rooms selling out recently, Scott said.

"It was a remarkable transformation," he said. "It is like walking into a brand-new room, but it still has the unique charm that the Peak is known for."

The Peak holds its Fall Fest and Beer & Wine Festival later this month.

Celebrate the Colors of Chautauqua A Fall Learning Festival, October 5-21, 2012 New this fall, the Colors of Chautauqua learning festival continues the Chautauqua tradition of lifelong learning with over 40 workshops in culinary, creative and cultural arts. Visitors as well as residents can register for classes and learn kitchen and gardening techniques, take lessons in painting, photography, sculpture and crafts, join guided walking tours, discover ways to research family history, and expand their knowledge of local foods, wine, and beer. The schedule runs two weeks during the peak of fall colors from October 5-21, 2012. Classes are held in both indoor and outdoor classrooms across Chautauqua County.

9th Annual Beer and Wine Festival

 

November 9-10, 2012, 3:30 to 7:30 PM, Yodeler Lodge
Holiday Valley Resort, the Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewery will host the 9th Annual Beer and Wine Festival at Holiday Valley’s Yodeler Lodge on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.
