Higgins Announces $150,000 Grant for Chadakoin Riverwalk in Jamestown

Jamestown, NY—Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced a $150,000 grant from the National Park Service for a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for the Chadakoin Riverwalk. This grant is in addition to the $1,600,000 which Higgins secured for the Jamestown Downtown Connector Trail project in the federal transportation bill passed last year.

The City of Jamestown will construct a new section of the Chadakoin Riverwalk, eventually extending the trail the entire length of the Chadakoin River within the city limits. The trail provides physical access to the riverfront area and an opportunity to reconnect areas of the city that have been disconnected by topography, the river, and an active railroad line. Located in the northwest quadrant of the city, this section of the pathway will consist of an eight- foot-wide pedestrian/bike path extending from Fairmount Avenue through Chadakoin Park to Clifton Avenue. Signage, lighting and landscaping are also included in the project.

“This funding will be a boon to the revitalization of the City of Jamestown and will help foster further economic development, tourism, and waterfront access,” said Congressman Higgins. “Access to the riverfront area is crucial to the prosperity of the entire city, and I look forward to seeing the real work begin.”

The grant for the Chadakoin Riverwalk comes from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), of which Higgins is a strong supporter. Last year he signed a letter to the House Appropriations Committee urging funding for the LWCF, which was at threat of being severely cut.
