USDA Helping Fund Water Project For Shorehaven Community

TWC NEWS VIDEO:  WESTFIELD, NY -- The Towns of Westfield and Ripley are moving forward with a water project with funding help from the USDA.  Westfield was awarded $838,000 to extend water service to more than 50 homes in the Shorehaven neighborhood.

The lake side community straddles the town line of Westfield and Ripley, and many of the homes there only have a seasonal water supply from Lake Erie.  This funding will allow them to replace the old system and connect it to the main water line on Route five.

"People down there can only use their property certain months of the year, so we're hoping now, with water lines, they'll have clean, reliable water and be able to use their property more of the year, said Martha Bills, (R) Westfield Town Supervisor.

The next step involves engineering the system and getting final approval to solicit bids.

The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy

ASHVILLE — At 2 p.m. on Saturday, meet at Dobbins Woods to celebrate the New Year with a ski and snowshoe tour. Dobbins Woods is a Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy preserve located on Bly Hill Road in Ashville. Skiers and snowshoers are welcome to bring their equipment of choice to explore the loop trail at Dobbins Woods. The tour will last approximately an hour.  Afterward, all are invited to join CWC staff for food and drink at Southern Tier Brewery.

Snowmobile trails set to open in Chautauqua County Wednesday

MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County’s 450 miles of snowmobile trails will open for the season Wednesday, weather permitting, County Executive Vince Horrigan announces. The trails, which are patrolled by the sheriff’s snowmobile division, attract more than 15,000 riders annually.
The trails are maintained by the county’s five snowmobile clubs, the Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club, the Cherry Creek Sno-Goers, the Ellery Sno-Cruisers, the Lake Effect Trailbreakers and the Sunset Drifters, along with landowners and volunteers.
Current trail conditions are available by calling toll-free (800) 242-4569. Interactive trail maps also are available on the websites of the snowmobile clubs.
Snowmobiles can be registered at the county’s three Department of Motor Vehicles offices in Dunkirk, Jamestown and Mayville. For information on hours and fees, call 753-4229 or visit the county clerk’s website at co.chautauqua.ny.us.

Little Valley is getting a concoction of new brews. Like Blueberry Wheat, 2 Brothers, and Stainless Steel IPA — three beers produced by Ellicottville Brewing Company.

EBC has cleared one of its final hurdles with its plans to open a brewery, tasting room, museum and outdoor concert venue.

The County of Cattaraugus Industrial Development Agency’s directors approved tax breaks for the planned $5.5 million project that will bring new life to a vacant building along Second Street in Little Valley. As many as 30 people will be hired for the project.

“This is significant, in a lot of different and important ways, for Little Valley,” said Corey Wiktor, County of Cattaraugus IDA executive director. Little Valley is less than 10 miles from Ellicottville.

Wiktor said the project qualifies for tax breaks because it is manufacturing based but also has a tourism, agri-business and adaptive re-use attributes.

Work on the building, last used by Salamanca Beverage Co. as a distribution center, is extensive including roof and siding repairs, parking lot improvements and electrical upgrades - all needed before the beer making equipment can be installed.

Unlike Ellicottville Brewing Co.’s locations in Ellicottville, Fredonia and Bemus Point, the focus on the Little Valley project will be on beer production, the concert venue and museum, which will focus on the craft brewery industry.

Little Valley will be the company’s primary brewery while Ellicottville will shift to the production on a new line of aged beers.

Founded in 1995, Ellicottville Brewery Co. now sells its beer in four states and in South Korea.

The company has 160 employees spread among its three locations.

Work on the project is expected to start later this winter with the production facility and tasting room anticipated to open late next year and the concert venue and museum to follow in 2018.

There's plenty to R-E-S-P-E-C-T about the upcoming Chautauqua Institution entertainment lineup.

Iconic singer Aretha Franklin — known for her hits "Respect," "Natural Woman" and "Chain of Fools" — will kick off the summer 2017 season with a soulful concert on June 24, 8:15 p.m., at the amphitheater. Other recently announced headliners include Lewis Black, who will give a lecture on July 31, 10:45 a.m., and a season finale concert by the Beach Boys on Aug. 26, 8:15 p.m., at the amphitheater.
Tickets are $69 and $50 for the Franklin and Beach Boys concerts, respectively, and go on sale starting Jan. 9. A gate pass, also on sale starting Jan. 9, is required to attend Black's lecture.
More 2017 season highlights include An Evening with Garrison Keillor (July 21; $42), a lecture by Bill Moyers (July 10; gate pass required), the Raleigh Ringers (July 12; $20) and the Joey Alexander Trio (Aug. 24; $43).

Chautauqua Institution Amp comes down in controlled collapse

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. (AP) — The Chautauqua Institution's 123-year-old amphitheater has been demolished to make way for a new venue that leaders say will have a similar feel but be safer and more accessible.

The roof of the structure came down in a controlled collapse Wednesday evening.

Crews are expected to have the site cleared by the end of next week.

Opponents have fought the project for two years, saying the structure is historic and should be preserved.

The new venue is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2017 summer season.
